Albert Lea, Minnesota Information
Albert Lea is a city in and the county seat of Freeborn County in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Minnesota.[6] The population was 18,016 at the 2010 census.
The city is at the junction of Interstates 35 and 90, about 90 miles (140 km) south of the Twin Cities and within an hours drive of Rochester, Mankato and Mason City, IA. Albert Lea is in the Shelrock River Watershed which includes Fountain Lake. It is on the shores of Fountain Lake, Pickerel Lake, Albert Lea Lake, Goose Lake, School Lake, and Lake Chapeau. Albert Lea has 41 parks compromising over 300 acres offering a wide variety of recreational activities including neighborhood park playfields, playground equipment, basketball courts, pickle ball courts, fishing areas, natural open spaces, a civic theater, senior citizen center, and an ice arena.
The city’s early growth was based upon agriculture, farming support services, manufacturing and was a significant rail center. At one time it was the site of Cargill’s headquarters. Like many U.S. towns Albert Lea continues to work hard in re-shaping its economicfuture. Mayo Clinic Health Systems leads the way with over 1500 employees, and is supported by the Albert Lea Area School System as the areas second largest employer. Our agricultural emphasis remains strong and continues to grow and opportunity is excellent for industry which can utilize Albert Lea's unique location.
